ICC Champions Trophy Winners

The ICC Champions trophy is one of the prestigious tournaments that every team wants to win to have an ICC trophy in their cabinet. This tournament starts in 1998 with the name ICC Knockout trophy with a format of winner to stay and loser to out. Over the period many teams have ended as winners of the Champions Trophy with Australia being the only side to have defended their Champions Trophy title.

South Africa – 1998 ICC Knock Out Trophy Winner

ICC knock out trophy held in Bangladesh in 1998 with 9 teams participating in the event. Event took place on knock out basis with only 8 matches deciding the fate of the championship and South Africa came out as victorious in first ICC event of its kind.

South Africa beat West Indies in the final by chasing 245 runs due to the bowling heroics of Jacques Kallis who restricted West Indies to only 245 despite the century of opener Philo Wallace. Kallis was awarded man of the match as well as man of the series for his 164 runs and 8 wickets.

New Zealand – ICC Knock Out Trophy winner 2000

2nd edition of the ICC Knockout trophy took place in Kenya in year 2000. This year 11 teams participated in the event all test playing nations at that time along with associates Bangladesh and host Kenya. Once again 11 teams played 10 games including the final.

New Zealand won the nail biter against India due to batting heroics of Chris Cairns who chased down the target in final over the match and remained unbeaten on 102 to win the player of the match award.

India & Sri Lanka – 2002 ICC CT Winner

ICC knock out trophy officially renamed as ICC Champions Trophy before 2002 edition which was the first ever ICC event which has a shared winner due to the no result. Sri Lanka hosted the event in which 12 teams played 16 games. Format of the event also changed from knock out as 12 teams have been divided in 4 groups with with top teams to qualify for the semi finals.

India restricted Sri Lanka to 222 runs because the new pace sensation Zaheer Khan who took 3 wickets but rain spoiled the chase for India who were in all good position to win the match despite losing opener Dinesh Mongia after 8 overs.

In 2004 ICC Champions trophy 12 Teams participated including USA and Kenya. The tournament was hosted by England. Like 2002 event 12 teams divided into four groups with top team from each group to qualify for the knock out stage.

Another champions Trophy final another nail biter with West Indies beats England in another ICC event final and made England wait longer to win their first ICC event. England restricted to 217 runs by Medium Pacer Wavell Hinds who gave away only 24 runs in 10 overs and get 3 scalps. West Indies were also reduced to 147/8 in 33rd over but Courtney Brown and Ian Bradshaw shared unbeaten partnership of 71 runs to have West Indies over the line and winning first major title after 1979.

Ian Bradshaw adjudged player of the match for his all-round show with the bat and ball. Middle order batter Ramnaresh Sarwan won the player of the series award for his 166 runs for the Caribbean side.

Australia – 2006 ICC CT Winner

First time in history of ICC Champions trophy 10 teams played as many as 21 games. The tournament was hosted by India and Australia have their hands on the title. 6 top teams directly qualified for the whereas other 4 teams played played a qualification round and with top two teams joined the other 6 in round matches.

This 8 teams divided into 2 groups with top 2 teams from each group qualified for the semifinals. Defending champion West Indies and Australia qualified for the finals. Australia floored West Indies 138 runs only and chased down the revised target of 116 in 28th over to have the title. Shane Watson declared player of the match whereas Chris Gayle named player of the series for his 474 runs and 8 wickets.

Australia defended their title successfully in 2009 when the event was hosted by South Africa. This year 8 top-ranked teams in ICC rankings were divided in two groups played 15 matches. Top 4 qualified for the semi-final.

Trans-Tasman rivalry prevailed and Australia and New Zealand qualified for the finals of the event. New Zealand only managed 200 runs with off-spinner Nathan Hauritz picking up 3/37. Australia chased down the target rather easily with man of the match Shane Watson scoring 10 not out. It was his second consecutive Man of the Match award in ICC Champions Trophy. Australian Captain Ricky Ponting was declared player of the series with 288 runs in the tournament.

India – CT Winner 2013

2013 edition of ICC Champions Trophy held in England on the same format as of 2009 edition. 8 top-ranked teams qualified for the event and played 15 games including the semifinals and final. This year India came out as victorious and didn’t lose a single game in the entire tournament.

The final of CT 2013 cut down to 20 overs a side due to rain. India only managed 129 runs in 20 overs mainly due to 43 runs by Virat Kohli and couple of 30’s from Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja. Despite defending the low score India strangled England and restrict them 124 runs and winning by 5 runs.  Jadeja was adjudged man of the match, whereas Shikhar Dhawan was named player of the series for his consistent batting throughout the event and scoring 363 runs.

Pakistan – Winner of Champions Trophy 2017

England again hosted the Champions trophy event in 2017. 8 teams played out 15 games. This time Pakistan won the event despite starting the event with a comprehensive defeat against India but beating the same side in the final to win the title.

Pakistan amassed 338 runs batting first in the final thanks to a century by opener Fakhar Zaman and couple of good knocks in the middle order by Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez. Defending the title fast bowler Mohammad Amir ripped through the Indian order and handed an easy win to Pakistan despite 43 ball 76 by Hardik Pandya as India bundles out for 158.

Fakhar Zaman was named player of the match whereas Hassan Ali bagged the player of the series award for his 13 wickets during the event.
